Our verdict

If you want to buy pipelines that just run, take Fivetran and pay the MAR pricing. If you need long-tail sources, want EU self-hosting, or have a team for the babysitting, Airbyte comes out far cheaper.

Buy it or run it

The ELT question is an operating-model question. Fivetran sells the promise that nobody has to think about pipelines again, and in daily practice it keeps it. Airbyte sells freedom: any source, any region, any edge case, paid for in your own maintenance.

Our field rule is unspectacular. Standard sources plus no data team equals Fivetran; long tail, data residency, or an existing platform crew equals Airbyte. Mixed setups are legitimate, by the way, critical routes managed, the rest self-hosted.

Privacy and EU fit

Fivetran offers EU data processing with a DPA but stays a US vendor in the data path; SCCs and a per-source field review belong in the file. Self-hosted Airbyte takes the vendor out of the data flow entirely, and hands you the responsibility for patches and access control in return.

Implementation effort

Fivetran is the fastest route: pick a connector, set a destination, done. Airbyte needs a deployment, monitoring, and an update rhythm. The difference is not one-off effort but standing load: community connectors vary in quality, and that is exactly where the babysitting comes from.

Pricing and TCO

Fivetran bills Monthly Active Rows, which gets expensive at scale, predictably expensive. Airbyte has no licence cost, but takes infrastructure and engineering time. The honest calculation compares the MAR invoice against the hours a team really sinks into pipeline care.

Migration

Switching is feasible because both load into the same warehouse and dbt models decouple the schemas. The work hides in details: sync modes, cursor fields, and historical backfills do not behave identically. We migrate source by source and run critical routes in parallel for two weeks.
